One of the successful businesses assisted by REDC is PolyChem Alloy, Inc. (www.polychemalloy.com). The company was formed in 1989 by Mr. Chakra V. Gupta, to establish the capability to manufacture specialized polymers and polymer alloys. Mr. Gupta is an expert in the field of polymer science and for a number of years, he provided consultant services to a variety of international companies in the development of unique "plastics" (polymer alloys) that exhibit specific characteristics, such as heat tolerance, durability, flexibility, etc., under specific conditions. Examples include elastomers for wire and cable, impact modified thermoplastic rubber used in appliances and computer housings, adhesives blends used in the automotive industry and environmentally safe, biodegradable packaging. In 1995, Region E Development Corporation (REDC) helped Mr. Gupta achieve his dream of establishing his own manufacturing operation, to produce the products he designs. Using the SBA 504 Loan Program, REDC helped Mr. Gupta purchase and install the specialized machinery and equipment used in the polymer extrusion process. This allowed PolyChem Alloy to grow "vertically" and take advantage of the high profit margins associated with the manufacturing process. Within 5 years Mr. Gupta had outgrown his leased facility and in 2000, REDC again used the 504 program to assist Mr. Gupta to construct his own manufacturing and office facility. Mr. Gupta now employs 30+ workers and business continues to grow. In 2004, Mr. Gupta expanded again with the addition of a third compounding line, which the company was able to finance internally. Mr. Gupta is a strong advocate of the SBA 504 Loan Program, crediting the assistance he received as being a critical element in PolyChem's success.
